Sparx automatically adjusts the difficulty of homework based on a student's ability.

However, teachers are responsible for ensuring that the topics assigned to the class are appropriate. We recommend checking the Planner each week and adding/removing topics where necessary. You can see which questions are in the topics by selecting View questions for the topic in the Planner page.

If students are finding homework too long or hard:

  • Double check that they are set to Level 1 (the easiest level) and override them to this level if not.

  • Consider setting them Half-length homework.

Update 2024-09: Towards the end of last year, we brought in an additional level to support lowest-attainers. Over the summer and moving into this academic year, we have been working to expand and improve our level 1 content based on feedback from schools and students to make sure there is plenty of accessible practice. Features of our new level 1 content include

  • reduced reading age of the question text.

  • avoiding questions where students need to spell complex scientific words.

  • questions are targeted on the fundamentals of each topics.

We are continuing this focus over this academic year.
