Accessing and interpreting reports

Updated today

Sparx Science provides several detailed reports to help you track student progress, homework completion, and engagement. This article explains how to access and interpret the different reports available to you.

Student Activity Report

You can download an Excel spreadsheet with homework completion data across the entire school and academic year in a single place via Reporting > Student Activity Report.

Building your report

When you click Generate Report, you'll be asked to choose the categories of data that you want to include, and the timeframe for which you wish to generate the report (defaults to the current academic year):

Default data

  • Student data - first name, surname, year group, science class and registration group

  • Weekly completion % - on-time and all-time % completion

  • Independent Learning (IL) challenge completion

  • Student homework settings - Homework difficulty level and default homework length / type

Optional data

  • Additional demographic data - PP (pupil premium), FSM (free school meals), EAL (English as an additional language), Gender

    • This data can only be included if we sync data from your MIS and your school's Wonde administrator has granted Sparx access to this data (if we've been granted access to some, but not all data, we'll include the data that we're able to)

  • Rewards data - includes XP & XP Level

  • Teacher names - includes the name(s) of any teachers associated with a class

Using filters to analyse your report

  • Most popular spreadsheet software allows you to easily filter and sort the data in your spreadsheet

  • You can use these features to help you to analyse the data in your student activity report

  • For example, in Microsoft Excel you can:

    • Use the dropdown arrows to the right of each column header to filter or sort the rows

    • Hide entire rows and/or columns that you are not interested in, in order to see a more streamlined view by right-clicking on the column letter or row number and selecting "Hide column/row"

Combined Student Activity Report

This report contains homework completion data for all Sparx systems [Sparx Maths, Sparx Reader & Sparx Science] used by your school. This includes year to date averages, as well as a week by week breakdown.

  • There is still an option to add student demographic data to the report

  • Student rewards information is not available on this report, as the focus is completely on homework completion

Frequently Asked Questions

When are reports updated?

All reports show real-time data, so you can download then at any time to see the current status across your school.

Why is my student activity report taking a long time to download?

Adding more data categories will mean that the report takes longer to generate. The report can also take longer to generate later in the school year when there's more data to process. If you're a larger school and generate a report containing all data categories towards the end of the school year, the report could take up to 2 minutes to generate.

How does the date filter work?

The student activity report reports by week. It's not possible to generate a report for a time period of less than a week. When you select a start and end date for the report, we'll include data for the full weeks that encompass your selected dates.

Can I add SEND data to the reports?

We don't include SEND data in any reports. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) consider such data to be 'special category data', which needs more protection than other categories of data.

Can I see time spent on the Student Activity Report?

The Student Activity Report does not currently include time spent, but you can see individual working time on a weekly basis from the Hand in page.
