To set homework with Sparx Science, several setup steps are required, these are detailed on the Getting Started Steps page in your Sparx Science site. Alternatively, you can follow the steps outlined in the second half of this page.
Using the Getting Started Steps page
The Getting Started Steps page in your Sparx Science site provides a detailed overview of the setup steps that need to be completed, customised to your school. You'll likely find it easiest to use this to guide you through the setup process.
When you first start using Sparx Science, you'll see a link to the Getting Started Steps page on your dashboard:
If you dismiss this, or need to refer to the Getting Started Steps page later on in the school year, you can also access it via the Getting Started steps option under your user menu:
Steps to complete
Set up Single Sign On
Set up Single Sign On
Single Sign On (SSO) allows teachers and students to access all Sparx systems with just one set of login credentials, simplifying the login process and saving time.
See Setting up single sign-on (login with Google / Microsoft) for more information.
Add Staff & Key Contacts
Add Staff & Key Contacts
To enable your colleagues to use Sparx Science, you'll need to set up Sparx Science accounts for them.
See Adding updating and removing staff members more information.
It's also important that you keep us updated about certain key contacts in your school (e.g. your finance contact, your IT contact etc.) so that we can ensure that important communications get sent to the right person.
See Adding, updating and removing key contacts for more information.
Complete Staff Training
Complete Staff Training
It's important that all teaching staff understand how to use Sparx Science in order that it's working the best that it can for your school. We provide a short training programme which helps users to familiarise with all of the key features of Sparx Science.
Add Holiday Dates
Add Holiday Dates
If you don't want to set homework during the school holidays, setting up your school holiday dates makes this easier.
See How to add or adjust holiday dates? for more information.
Create Schemes of Learning
Create Schemes of Learning
In order for Sparx Science to set homework automatically with minimal teacher intervention, you'll need to set up the schemes of learning that your classes will follow.
See Managing schemes of learning for more information.
MIS Connection
MIS Connection
Sparx Science imports your classes and students from your MIS and keeps them in sync automatically. This connection is shared across Sparx systems so may already be connected if your school already uses another Sparx system. You will need to allow the correct permissions on your Wonde portal.
See Connecting to your MIS for more information.
Manage Parent email settings
Manage Parent email settings
We send weekly homework update emails to parents/carers to keep them informed of their child's progress. Our research shows that on-time hand-in rates are significantly higher (15%) at schools where these are enabled. Please note the Parent Emails feature requires the appropriate permission to be approved in your MIS.
See Adding Parent Emails for more information.
Import Classes and Students
Import Classes and Students
You'll need to choose which classes to import from your school's MIS, into Sparx Science. When you import classes, all students in those classes will be imported too.
See Importing classes & students for more information.
Adjust Student Settings
Adjust Student Settings
You can set students to higher and separate science where appropriate. We exclude higher-only questions from students' homework unless the Higher setting is turned on (and the same for Separate).
Complete your class setup and turn homework on
Complete your class setup and turn homework on
There are some final setup steps that you'll need to complete before turning on homework for your classes, so we know when to set the homework, when it's due to be handed in and what topics to put into the homework.
See Scheduling homework for more information.
Show your students how to use Sparx Science and get them logged in for the first time
Show your students how to use Sparx Science and get them logged in for the first time
To ensure that your students hit the ground running when they receive their first Sparx Science homework, we strongly recommend that you show them how Sparx Science works, and verify that they can all log in, before you set their first homework.
See Introducing Sparx Science to your students for more information.
